The boy has still got it. I really hope he settles at Hull. It's been a tough few years for him and I know alof of it is self-inflicted but I'd like to see him have a good run.

My thoughts too. No need for bitterness towards him IMO.

I think the bitterness about Gleeson from our fans reveals the fact that they were upset when he left. You don't get all this hate from Wire fans towards say Stuart Reardon, when he left we didn't think he was good enough for our team any more so we moved him on and forgot about him. But Gleeson - who played the best rugby of his career in the first half of his spell with us, and ended up being worth a nice transfer fee plus a decent player as part of the deal, when we sold him. But he has joined the ranks of guys like Harris and Fozzard in that Wire fans go on about him like girls do about their exes that they can't get over and continually have to bad mouth when they are gone.



I agree that we are better off without him, even though I've always been a Gleeson fan, I think we had him in his best form, and then regardless of any conjecture about his 'off field' lifestyle, just judging his form on the pitch I think TS cashed in on him at just the right time. He has still 'got it' as a player, but he only shows it in patches these days, and that started from 2007-2008 his last two years with us, when from 2005-06 he was consistently the business. TS had been with him all winter before he came, at the World Cup, when Gleeson did play well, but he moved him on very soon after he arrived, maybe TS realised that we were cashing in with a very good deal on a player who had gone past the peak of his career and had moved from 'very good' to 'a handful on his day'.



Also regarding the off field stuff, you sometimes see with players who had the tendency to be controversial right through their careers, that when they reach a point where they have to face up to the fact they are past their best as a player, they go on a downward spiral in terms of behaviour....look at how John Hopoate became a farce in the later years of his NRL career, and Stan Collymore and Gazza in the latter days of their footballing careers. Maybe Paul Cooke has suffered the same thing.

As I said last week, Gleeson is the most talented centre I've seen in a Wire shirt (bareing in mind, the times Davies used to change postions). A very good rugby brain, huge natural talent, not slow either (remember his try at COMS v Aussies in '04) and devastating footwork.



I was a bit peeved when Smith got rid, but Smith's the boss. He lives and dies (coaching wise) by his decisions. Smith could see he had too many issues, and (rightly) got rid. We got more salary cap room, and £100,000. Good business in my eyes....and, as it turns out, the correct decision. Well done Smith.



As I said previously, let's move on. I've no more interest in Gleeson, than I have in, say, Clint Greenshields. Great talents both, but let's concentrate on our own.



The one (tiny) thing that irks me, is Monday. I hope he doesn't get abused by some of our "sillier" fans, as he doesn't deserve it. Yes, maybe he didn't want to sign for us, but he NEVER let us down.

Gleeson was just moved by TS either because he wasn't in his plans or he saw the deal with Wigan as a good one..

total utter bilge ....give me king over gleeson any day..i.e semi final at widnes.king totally outshone this upstart..never knew gleeson was on the pitch that day..the only thing gleson can brag about was the grand final last season..stop comparing other players to back up a none existant argument you may dream up

Good post, and a fair assessment for the most part, although i think that Saints had probably the best two seasons out of him immediately before he left to you. I think he also left to us (Wigan) for off the field reasons not on the field, with TS making an example of Gleeson, to say to the players he had that you have perform on and off the field or youll be out the door.



He will be a good player for Hull, and is still one of the best centres in SL. Although off the field issues are likely to happen again. (especially with Long in the same team) Finally i think that he should have left Saints for the NRL, where he was very highly rated at the time, that way if he was (and still is) a victim of circumstance he could have started afresh.

I don't see what Fozzard owed us? He signed a two year deal, stayed with us for his full contract, stayed fit and played well throughout, and then he signed for another club. He was well within his rights. Didn't we put a clause in his contact giving us an easy option to release him if he suffered a recurrence of his arm injury - he would have been out of the door with no mercy if that had happened.



If Fozzard was out of order then what about Ryan Atkins? He was a nobody in Bradford's reserves, John Kear gave him a chance and look at the thanks he gives them....we win the Challenge Cup and he wants to jump on the bandwagon.

I reckon at Saints, Gleeson had one good season (2002), one average season (2003, where he got dropped from the GB squad but played very well for the England A team against the touring Aussies), and then one half fantastic season (2004) where he was looking real quality before he got banned.



With us he had a full quality season (2005) where he was in SL Dream Team, a good season (2006), an then two hit and miss seasons (2007-icon_cool.gif. It is probably fair criticism that in those seasons he seemed to have lost his appetite a bit, I think he had probably realised by then that we weren't going to be the team he expected us to be when he joined us, and he probably regretted joining us and got demotivated.

Gleeson is still a great centre that any winger would love to play outside of. Will not be getting any grief off me we had are monies worth and now both parties have moved on.

We all have our own stories re: circumstances of Gleeson's leaving. My version would question the idea that it was entirely Smith's decision, as I understood Gleeson played his part. One of Smith's first acts when he took over was getting all the playing staff in the room and asking the lot of them to be honest and if ANYONE there didn't want to play for the club they should let it be known. ONE person didn't want to play for the club, and he got the move he wanted.

Remember the game at the stoop, king coffee beans game, every try that day was down our right side, Gleeson was at fault for a lot of them, i always think it was that game which made TS ask the question of Gleeson and his commitment.

I think there's almost two Gleeson's (well there are), what he gives you on the field is not in question but you have to weigh up that against what he doesn't give you off the field and without question his ethics didn't fit with the way we wanted to conduct ourselves or should I say Smith wanted our club to conduct themselves.



He'll be fine at Hull, where Agar is Cull-like, it'll suit him more to have a 'well as long as he does his stuff on the pitch, i'm not too bothered' sort of coach again. If Gleeson had played 20 years ago, he'd have loved it, he's very much the sort of 'win or lose on the booze' type it seems.



On the pitch, I thought he was excellent yesterday, constant threat.

His talent and ability is beyond question, which begs the question; what does he get up to off the field?

Bingo, he just plays Bingo constantly. Next time they're on SKY have a look, you can still see feint blobber marks on his hands.

Not sure why he wouldn't have wanted to play for the club, they had always been very fair to him. Think it may have been more to do with Smith not finding his off pitch behaviour acceptable.

TBF Agar (or the club) has shipped out King, Lee, Thackray, Raynor and Tansey all due in varying degrees to off the field issues.

You do have to ask how long big G will last then?

I think he has been made aware of that t.b.h.,if he keeps in line then no problem,if he doesn`t he will be shipped out.

Gleeson was never commited to Warrington, best bit of business Tony Smith did was to offload him to Wigan.
