Would you believe that a few minutes after posting that I had a flashback to seeing them when I got my saints ticket yesterday, haha!



I quite like 'wire' and 'wolves' being kept seperately, the former has a feeling of tradition and belonging to the fans on the terraces, whilst the latter represents the club's corporate image which is invaluable today, not only does it give us an identity which can be used for merchandise, mascots etc it's a name which is becoming recognised nationwide from my experience of speaking to people at uni etc.



I also think it's a good touch that 'Wolves' is relevant to the club and town's heritage. The golden gates, crest and Wilderspool. I can't say I would have the same enthusiasm for Wildcats.



Just a quick addendum, whilst I have no interest in soccer I would always wish Town every success, I went to their 2010 end of season dinner which was a great night and there seems to be a lot of hard work going on behind the scenes lately which should be commended.

I agree completely. I was simply pointing out that they have caught on in some places - most notably Bradford and Leeds - more than they have in Warrington where the "old" nickname is still going strong.

If you read the Peel Holdings Ocean development proposals (along with some of the other "aims" on their website) they won't be getting anywhere near a footbal field if they stay at Cantilever Park

Am I right in thinking that Peter Reid has been helping out with coaching as well? Never been to a Warrington Town game, but might try and get to one this upcoming season.



Despite the 'wendyball' shouts on this forum, there is a massive interest in football in the town, perhaps even bigger than Rugby League you could argue. The problem lies in the fact that most people already support one of the big three North West teams, as well as there being a scattering of people following the likes of Everton, Bolton and Wigan, so even if Warrington Town achieved league status I can't imagine the crowds ever being that high.



Good luck to them with achieving promotion anyway, but more importantly perhaps a decent run in the FA Cup would raise awareness and interest in the side. Do they ever get anywhere near the 1st round of the competition?

i go to every warrington town home game and get to a few away would love to see a few rugby supporters or anyone down there though as the attendances aren't great and there are the same faces there every i no pretty much every supporter by name the push for promotion looks good this year with the new coach in who seems like a good bloke and about 45 players on trial at the moment and keeping the best 25 which can only benefit the club. gary skent and others like jay standing work really hard down at the club and are trying to push the advertisement. and as for the FA cup question they usually get to about 3rd qualifier where we draw a conference side you have to win 4 qualifiers to get to the first round.

Arf. I realise you might be having a dig but in my experience - obviously this was pre-Abu Dhabi - Everton had far more fans in Warrington than Man City.



I checked Town's website yesterday after I posted this and as it turns out they're at home to a mongrel XI at 2pm on the Saturday of Wire V Wigan so I might make it a double header.



They'll never be a well supported club as you say though for the exact reasons you mentioned. In the extremely unlikely event they get into the Football League - four promotions would be required - they'll suffer the same symptoms of clubs like Bury and Rochdale where they are too closely located to bigger city clubs in the Premier League.



If they were to get a real benefactor who transformed them as Whelan did to Wigan Athletic they would simply become the next Wigan Athletic - a football club in a rugby town where most football fans already support someone else, the catchment area outside the town itself is non existant due to other much bigger clubs, and the lowest attendances in the Premier League are the end result.

Some interesting comments - Having been a life long Wolves (Wire) fan and a football supporter I believe there is room for two successful sporting brands in the town. This is also the view of my fellow directors.

The Wire has always been a name connected to the town of Warrington and when the new board took over four years ago we thought it was a stronger brand than The Yellows.

Our club badge has always been the town's coat of arms and we felt the brand the Wire, which had been totally dropped as a brand by the Wolves at the time, was a good one to adopt.

We have worked closely and indeed supported and sponsored the Wolves and there has never been any issue with us using the Wire as a nickname/brand.

We even had a joint training session last year and are hoping to arrange another soon at our new training camp at Orford Park.

We now have superb training facilities which better than most football league teams.

We also have a new manager (Shaun Reid brother of Peter) who is building a strong squad to take us a step nearer the promised land.

We signalled our ambitions four years ago and now after doing a lot of hard work behind the scenes we are ready to take the next step.

While I agree that many people will always seen Warrington as a rugby town - the facts show that for every child that plays rugby league in Warrington - nine play football.

Many premier league fans are falling out of love with the game at the highest level due to the obsence salaries and some are starting to look at non league football as an alternative and more affordable game to follow.

All we ask is that every football fan out there who lives in Warrington is to adopt us as your second team - come and watch a game and see just how enjoyable it is.

That is very true. I only went to about 15 LFC games last season which is half the number I was doing as recently as three or four years ago for several reasons, but cost being the main one. If I still lived in Warrington I probably would be inclined to watch a few Town games now.

I went a few years back for a Cup game against Stalybridge Celtic, quite enjoyed. Nice clubhouse and bar.



Good luck to them. Anything which gives people more semi-pro sport to watch, and more local lads the chance to test themselves at a decent level, has to be a good thing.
