2009 - Was that the season Leeds won the League Leaders Shield finishing 4 points clear of the field and took out the Grand Final led by a coach who became the first to successfully defend the title?
Perhaps the players did or didn't appreciate the coaching that enabled them to achieve a credible title but from a supporting point of view I preferred those type of efforts over any [ihalf-d [/ififth placed finish.

| Quote rhinoms="rhinoms"Having a military back-ground i know full well about the man management and motivational skills all our Armed Forces incorporate and again that's a fair point but saying that surely they shouldn't need too much motivation at this time of year?
I agree there's a steel focus and the coach does deserve some credit for that i dont dispute that and like before i'll heap ,praise when its due without question but as fans surely its not wrong to voice opinions on performances when they are poor whne you've shelled out to attend??
As for rumours there have been plenty especially with the Webb situation but of course that's not apparent in performance or effort at this time of year.'"
It could be said that you would be happier then with Wigans record this year than the Rhinos. Granted we havnt won the championship yet but we are at least in the final.

| At this point in Leeds' recent history making the final means next to nothing if you don't go on and win. Anyone that celebrates coming second has a loser's mentality.
The bean-counters will appreciate the additional revenue though.

It should be said that i'd be happier walking away from the p!$$ poor performances happier if we'd turned up and had a go rather bending over and taking it up the @rris and showing the resolve of a soggy kit-kat.
Dont mind losing and even the odd (ST's away) blip it has happened to TS ,Bluey etc etc when they were in charge aswell.
Not only that looking at the "big games" this year and last its clear they capable of much much better both in terms of effort ,composure and quality.
I dont expect them to win every game or even play at their maximum best every match just have a dig dont get humiliated on a regular basis which has happened far too often in the last 2 yrs imo.

Then I can still only draw the obvious conclusion that you would rather have Wigans playing record this year than the Rhinos.
You are naturally looking at it from a ST supporters standpoint whilst the coach has to consider perhaps who else is also watching and drawing conclusions from his selections and game plans to win what to him are meaningless games at the very best worth only 2 league points.

It was indeed, and yet you will remember that McClennan was heavily criticised by some of our fans towards the end of that season for taking the team backwards. Not a view I necessarily agreed with then either. I'm merely making the comparison between the players attitudes towards them. I'm not party to the coaching abilities of either of them. None of us are.
The reasons for the last 2 seasons 5th placed finishes are still up for debate, but it hasn't hindered our ability to contest for trophies.

I'm not sure what it adds to the debate either way but I recall some players saying they were particularly determined to win the hubcap in 2009 because there had been comments made somewhere that the success in winning the 07 and 08 finals was undermined by having come from second.
I remember Wigan players in the 1990s saying that it was fear of becoming the team which lost that drove them on in their Challenge Cup run. This team instead seem to have taken additional motivation from a constant desire to prove people wrong.
Paradoxically, and somewhat distressingly, this means of course that Headingley's booing s have played a vital role in our Super League success, alongside the naysaying journos and unsophisticated opposition head coaches. The team comes alive when they are told they aren't good enough to win or not worthy enough having won or, heaven forbid, that they are chosen out of a line up as the weakest link. I suspect, just like Wane, Brian McDermott stores away every slight and perceived injustice and catcall. Unlike the pie muncher, though, he has the wit to use it for creative rather than self-destructive ends.

| Quote Richie="Richie"Rather than subjectively guessing at light years, we actually have a match of rugby league to objectively measure the gap between the two teams.'"
Given the various issues surrounding the WCC, it really doesn't provide any true indication of the respective merits of the two teams. The English teams Iincluding leeds) have struggled to compete over the last few years and yet, they have been holding significant advantages. You also have to question the motivation shown by the Australian teams.
I wasn't guessing, I think I've learn to discern what is good and what is exceptional.

| Quote tvoc="tvoc"YEP - 6th October 2008
Leeds had been crushed 38-10 at Saints in the qualifying semi-final 15 days earlier and skipper Kevin Sinfield said the way they bounced back made it one of his career highlights. [i"It's right up there because of what happened two weeks ago, with everybody writing us off,"[/i he said. [i"There were 17 warriors out there and Bluey can take a lot of credit because two weeks ago there were some lads with their heads on the floor; we were completely shot after the disappointment of what happened at Saints. I know that's what he's paid to do, but he has done a great job in turning it around and keeping a very special trophy at Headingley." [/i
Two-try hero Danny McGuire saluted boss Brian McClennan after Leeds Rhinos retained their engage Super League title. McClennan took over the defending champions from Tony Smith and steered them to a unique Carnegie World Club Challenge/ Super League double in his debut campaign. Speaking after Saturday's 24-16 Grand Final downing of St Helens, McGuire said:[i "We have worked hard this year, we've had tough times, but we've stuck together and the coaching staff have been outstanding. Bluey has been great. He's not tried to change things dramatically overnight, he's just added a few subtle things here and there. He's such a positive bloke and so enthusiastic, you can't help but want to win for him."[/i'"
Quote tvoc="tvoc"YEP - 6th October 2008
Compare the above quotation with his current tributes to McDermott on Sky Sports and the Leeds web site- see below:
"Sinfield was the hero with four goals and a drop goal, but he believes most of the credit should go to McDermott, who has guided Leeds to the Challenge Cup final and the Grand Final in each of his first two seasons at the helm.
"[iHe's the best coach I've had[/i," said Sinfield, who twice lifted the Super League trophy under Tony Smith, now the coach of Warrington. [i"His mix of man-management and his game plan is second to none. Since Brian Mac has been in charge, we've been in every final so far. I love playing for him. I can't praise him enough, I've so much respect for him and I hope he's here for a very long time.
"He needs to take some credit for what he's done again, especially if you look at how many bodies we've got available. We've probably got one of the smallest squads running and add to that the amount of games we've had to play. It's just been relentless for the group. We've been playing every weekend since the end of January and, hopefully, we've got one more big effort in us."[/i
Sinfield quite rightly gave praise to each coach for the contributions they made. He credits Brian McClennan with having motivated the team after being well beaten by St Helens (while Mags thinks he is a good bloke who just did a bit here and there)
Compare that with the specific tributes to McDermott with regard man-management and his game plan being second to none. He also made comments on the Leeds Web site about McDermott’s player development abilities and tactical awareness being second to none.
The tributes to McClennan and McDermott are not equal with the former being just with regard to motivation and the second being motivation plus technical , man-management and player development. And the best coach in his experience. The significance of his repeated praise of McDermott is that it is with regard to his key coaching abilities. Sinfield’s comments are specific and first hand and they totally refute the negative comments from the laypeople of the keyboard coaching fraternity on this forum.

I don't think that was the point of my post but I agree indeed they are not. One came after actually winning something.
I'm hearing plenty of excuses being lined up which is unfortunate if true. Squad size may well be down to the CEO but squad utilisation and rotation is down to the coach.
